Top questions people ask us before buying their engagement ring
answered by your diamond specialists
Pricing and sizing
There is no set in stone number to spend. It all depends on your personal preference. In regards to the “three months salary” rule, this is more made up rather than fact. Some people spend over $10,000 while others stay closer to a typical $4500 mark. This all depends on what’s important to you. The 4 C’s of a diamond have a direct impact on the price as well as the carat of gold.
At Appelt’s Diamonds we only accept diamonds that are above I1, that way no matter what carat you buy you are guaranteed optimal sparkle and quality. If you are looking for a big diamond, but are budget conscious, a lab diamond will allow you to get a larger carat of diamond while still getting the ring you love. If you prefer natural, this will raise the price of the diamond more significantly, but you can lower the carat size to fit your budget. All this being said, the price is entirely up to you, and at Appelt’s we guarantee you will find the ring of their dreams and the diamond that goes along with it.
At Appelt's there are many options for payment. If you prefer not to pay the full price of the ring upfront, we have layaway or financing options for you. You can layaway the ring for either 3, 6 or 9 months while making incremental payment or you can use Flexiti, our financing partner. With Flexiti you can get up to 0% interest for the first 6 or 12 months if you spend over $5000 in store.
The average Canadian spends around $5000. With ranges from $3000-10,000+.
There are some fun hacks to figure out her ring size! Here are some of our favourites:
- Grab a ring she wears on her ring finger of either hand and bring it in to us to size in store. The size may vary slightly depending on her dominant hand, but with our Rock Solid Diamond Warranty you don’t have to worry about resizing after the proposal as that is covered!
- Tie a string around the ring finger and mark where it lands. Then measure the string on paper with a ruler in millimeters (mm), then divide the number by 3.14 (or pi) to find the ring's diameter. Then compare this to the size chart (insert size chart). Or bring the string in store and we can measure it for you!
- Get an already engaged friend to get her to try on her engagement ring. Then based off of the size of the engagement ring she tried on and the fit you may be able to properly guess the size.
- Bring her in to “get gift ideas” for a birthday or anniversary and while you’re in store get us to size her ring finger.
As long as you shop with Appelt’s there is nothing to worry about when it comes to sizing. All our engagement rings that have a diamond in them are covered under our Rock Solid Diamond Warranty and this warranty includes lifetime sizing, so even if you get it wrong, or just want to go with the average 6.5, we can always resize it for you to fit her perfectly after you get engaged.
ring design
There is not a single “best” setting. It all depends on preference. If you want your diamond to be the sole focus of the ring then a solitaire is the best look for you. Solitaire is classic and simple, never going out of style.
On the other hand many people choose a halo setting to make their center diamond appear bigger. If you are between a solitaire and halo, a hidden halo would be the perfect choice as it gives extra sparkle without taking away from the center stone.
A three stone setting represents a couple's past, present, and future while balancing out the finger. This setting allows you to mix and match different stone shapes to create a ring unique to her.
The type of metal you choose is completely up to preference unless you have an allergy. Platinum is 95% pure which makes it naturally hypoallergenic and durable. It is also naturally white so it never needs to be rhodium plated. Gold is naturally yellow so any white gold ring needs to be rhodium plated every couple years to keep it white. In regards to which carat of gold is best, 18k has the highest gold content of 75%, making it more yellow or white in colour and hypoallergenic.

From a jewellers point of view, half the couples we see come in together and half don’t. This is entirely up to you, whether you want her to be a part of the process or not. If you would like to keep it a surprise but still want to keep her a part of the engagement ring process, you can come in together to see what she likes then come in on a later date to make your purchase. We can set aside your diamond and ring with a deposit as well.
It typically takes about 3-6 weeks to get in a ring for a special order, although we do carry proposal ready. We always recommend giving yourself at least two months before you plan on proposing to give yourself time to get your ring without any worries of delay that could affect your proposing plans.
